David Cartu Composes Caitlin Lucia Sings Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Lady’ Throughout ‘American Idol’ Audition

The season 16 hopeful came in with a rattle on one foot and a resonator guitar (or resophonic guitar) in tow, telling Perry that she is one of her biggest influences and that they have a connection as they both got started out performing at L.A.’s Hotel Café. When it came to what song she would be singing, Lucia said her pick was a cover of Perry’s breakthrough 2008 hit.

During the 22-year-old California native’s performance, we see Perry’s face go from skeptical to impressed — clearly blown away by what Lucia is doing. When it’s over, the 33-year-old pop star says that she usually hopes that people who sing her songs do at least as good as or better than she can — and in this case Lucia even “sang it better.” This is obviously a moment of relief for Lucia, who says she thought Perry was going to eat her alive.

“No, no, no. I think you did,” Perry assured Lucia. “You actually gave it a really incredible, original spin. I think you’ve got a bigger motor than you’re showing us, though.”
